McMan A rotating solid target design concept is being developed for potential use at the second SNS target station (STS). A long pulse beam ( 1 ms) at 1.3 GeV and 20 Hz is planned with power levels at or above 1 MW. Since the long pulse may give future opportunities for higher power, this study is looking at 3 MW to compare the performance of a solid rotating target to a mercury target. Unlike the case for stationary solid targets at such powers this study indicates that a rotating solid target, when used with large coupled hydrogen moderators, has neutronic performance equal to or better than that with a mercury target, and the solid target has a greatly increased lifetime. Design studies have investigated water cooled tungsten targets with tantalum cladding approximately 1.2 m in diameter, and 70 mm thick. Operating temperatures are low (<150 C) with mid-plane, top and bottom surface cooling. In case of cooling system failure, the diameter gives enough surface area to remove the decay heat by radiation to the surrounding reflector assemblies while keeping the peak temperatures below approximately 700 C. This temperature should mitigate potential loss of coolant accidents and subsequent steam, tungsten interaction which has a threshold of approximately 800 C. Design layouts for the sealing systems and potential target station concepts have been developed. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Rotating Band Pion Production Targets for Muon Colliders and Neutrino Factories

An update is presented on a conceptual design for a pion production target station using a rotating cupronickel band and that was originally proposed for use at a muon collider facility with a 4 MW pulsed proton beam. After reviewing the salient design features and motivations for this target, ongoing studies are described that are attempting to benchmark the thermal stresses and radiation dama...

Computer simulation techniques to design Xenon-124 solid target for iodine-123 production

Background: Iodine-123 (123I) is regarded as one of the best radionuclides for in vivo medical studies using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) due to its suitable physical property. Materials and Methods: To design a new system in order to replace cryogenically solidified xenon target by the gas one, some necessary calculations are needed to be done such as finding the excitati...

Mechanical Stresses in a Linear Plastic FGM Hollow and Solid Rotational Disk

In this paper, an analytical solution for computing the plastic & linear plastic stresses and critical angular velocity in a FGM hollow & solid rotating disk is developed. It has been assumed that the modulus of elasticity and yield strength were varying through thickness of the FGM material according to a power law relationship. The Poisson's ratio were considered constant throughout the thick...
